Featured Frequently Asked Questions
1.What Color Chroma Key is best - Green Screen or Blue Screen?

Choose a color that is NOT prominent in your subject. For example, if the subject has green clothing on, choose the Blue Chroma key Screen / Backdrop. If the subject has blue clothing, you would then choose the Green Chroma key Screen / Background. Many photographers have both a Blue and Green Chroma key backdrop for this reason.

So if your subject is wearing green – use a blue screen! If your subject is wearing blue – use a green screen! Unless of course you are looking to make special effects (like an invisible man movie) where your subject disappears into the background.

2. Why is the foam-backed green screen and blue screen the best?

Chroma-Key.com Foam-backed backdrops are highly regarded in the film industry for many reasons.

Unlike competing paper, paint, and other chroma key fabrics, Chroma-Key.com backdrops have a top layer composed of millions of tiny loops that break up the light rays by absorbing and scattering them. This allows the user to easily light the backdrop evenly with minimal effort! The foam core also gives their fabric a unique stretchiness and resilience to wrinkles, and a reinforced nylon backing makes it extremely durable. All their backdrops are made in Chroma-key.com facilities and can be customized with specific material, grommets, rod pockets, Velcro and more! Trusted by the professionals and amateurs alike – they’ve been in business for over 30 years.  Recent Chroma-key.com Clients include CNN, Disney, and numerous schools, churches and television studios. MOST other chroma key fabric backdrops are thin, highly susceptible to wrinkles and must be finished on all sides to prevent them from unraveling on the edges. These backdrops are commonly muslin, cotton, polyester or cotton/poly blends. Because of the three layer laminate design, Chroma-key.com foam-backed fabric is extremely strong and will not fray or unravel on the edges. It is also the thickest, most wrinkle resistant fabric in the industry. Since foam-backed backdrops are NOT dyed after manufacturing, you are getting a true Chroma-key backdrop that is machine washable. Their fabric has gained a reputation of being the number one used Chroma-Key material in the industry!

3. What's the best chroma-key backdrop - Fabric, Foam, Paper or Paint?

FOAM-BACKED

The best solution most of the time is the foam-backed material.   Unlike fabric, it has a thickness/opacity that makes it wrinkle free and durable.  It has a soft deep front face that absorbs light and helps eliminate unwanted spill - making the green or blue foam-backed screen easier to light.  Foam also fantastic for chroma-key floors - it rolls out like a rug nice and flat (unlike fabric).

Although it costs more than a fabric backdrop - it pays for itself many times over with time saved lighting the screen and time spent in post-production work.

FABRIC

Fabric is the next best solution.  Our fabric is less-prone to wrinkles than muslin backdrops (muslin or cotton is well know for it's wrinkle properties).  The reason for choosing fabric over foam-backed is that it's smaller and transports more easily.  Fabric also can store in a smaller amount of space than a foam-backed backdrop.  We also have flame-retardant fabric green and blue screens that you can custom order.

PAPER

Paper is quick and easy to set up.  It's not very expensive but can be hard to transport (especially a 9 foot roll).  It also reflects light more than the foam-backed and fabric solutions.

PAINT

Paint is often used to cover a wall(s) or a cove in a studio.  It is also great for painting props like chairs, desks and other wooden furniture.  It's a very flat finish paint, but that also makes it harder to clean.  Paint often ends up costing more over time because flat paint doesn't clean up well and you end up re-painting your studio over time.
